Native American Lakota star  November 20 - Talking Circle: Big Island Indigenous Film Festival
Location: Palace Theater - Hilo, Hawaii.
Notes: The Federation of American Natives in partnership with Big Island Resource Conservation and Development Council will take the stage, November 20-22, 2009, launching its inaugural Talking Circle: The Big Island Indigenous Film Festival. "Talking Circle" will be held at the historic Palace Theater in downtown Hilo, Hawaii. The festival will showcase productions by Native Americans, Native Hawaiians and First Nations media makers. It will promote and provide exposure to the works of a rapidly growing field of outstanding independent, indigenous filmmakers. Historically film has created stereotypes that have eroded the self image of indigenous people. With the advent of digital media it has become a tool for redefining those perceptions. Now we have the power to tell our own stories, in our words, with our images. "Talking Circle" will offer a window into multifaceted indigenous cultures in format that is accessible and entertaining. It is presented with support from the County of Hawaii, the Hawaii Tourism Authority and Friends of the Palace Theater. Award winning actor and artist Michael Horse is a member of the film festival team.
